My name is Melana McEwen and I am the owner and therapist here at Taranaki Colon Hydrotherapy. I have been operating for 11 years using the LIBBE open colonic system. After using different systems myself, I prefer the LIBBE system over others because although it is equal in effectiveness, I feel it is more comfortable for the client and most of all, it works with the body's natural peristalsis (muscle contractions) and so the therapeutic benefits are not only removing waste from the body but also exercising your bowel muscles, improving your ability to have regular, complete bowel motions.
After experiencing my first colonic in 2007, I felt transformed and decided that I needed to make this therapy readily available to the people of Taranaki. I have now provided this therapy for well over 1000 people, many of whom return and have now made colonics a regular part of their health maintenance.
As a busy mum of 3 young boys, I strive to maintain a healthy balance with all the demands of this wonderful life.
So, the hours of the clinic are: 9:30 am to 3 pm Monday - Saturday
Clinic rates:
First time treatment including consultation - $120
Repeat visits - $100
3 x sessions - $300
6 x sessions - $550
A first time appointment can take up to 2 hours (usually between an hour and a half and 2 hours). You're not on the bed the whole time, with a first appointment we have a little consultation as well as the hydrotherapy so it takes a bit longer. For further treatments, the appointments take just over an hour.
Some people find huge relief and change after just one session but regularity of treatments depends on the individual.
It can be a little scary when it's your first time but it really is the most fascinating treatment to experience. Nearly everyone tells me that it's a lot more comfortable than they were expecting and end up coming back for follow up sessions.
With the treatment, warm filtered water flows into the bowel continuously for 45 minutes. Every so often you get the feeling you need to empty and the body is able to do this on our specially designed bed. So you have 30 - 40 poos while you are here, all the while, relaxing back and just letting it happen (which can be a bit weird to start with but feels amazing the more you are able to relax into it). The tube is the size of your little finger and only goes in about 2cm so is very non-invasive. I do a demonstration (with my pants on) before you get ready and then you are able to insert the tube yourself.
As for preparation, it's always good to make sure you're drinking a good amount of water. There are great fibre products on the market - Poo Brew from your local health shop is a great product to start softening matter in the bowel so would be good to get into before your session. I don't recommend doing anything that is going to stress you out too much. The more relaxed you are for your session the better. Try not to eat anything too heavy on the day of your session but fasting definitely isn't necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Colon Hydrotherapy embarrassing?
No mess, no fuss, no odour - in fact, a very relaxing experience. Your dignity is completely maintained with proper draping in a private room.
Does it hurt?
Rarely. Sometimes during the procedure the muscles of the colon contract which feels like cramping or trapped gas however this usually passes quite quickly. Most of of the process is mild and gentle with a wonderfully light and empty feeling afterwards.
Will one session completely empty the colon?
Almost never. Many of us have 5 or more kilos of impacted faeces in our colon. This faeces is a hardened, rubbery material and therefore substantial work must be done to remove it. If it took 30 years to accumulate, it may take some time, effort and patience to eliminate!
Does colon hydrotherapy wash away all bacteria, even the good?
If your bowel is toxic you have little or no good intestinal flora to begin with. Cleaning the bowel improves the environment tremendously so that good bacteria with live and thrive within. Probiotics (good bacteria) are provided following a colon hydrotherapy session.
